There is no expiry date for this certificate, however you may want to refresh the course periodically. The timescale for a refresh depends on the type of course that is being taken and the nature of your business. Ideally, the refresh regularity should be based on a thorough risk assessment of your business and tailored to the unique needs of your organisation and customers (if you are unsure how to complete a risk assessment, you can learn more by completing our Risk Assessment Awareness course).

If you are looking for a general rule for refresh training, every 12-18 months is good practice for the courses that Learn Q offer (we will also email you a reminder when you approach the recommended refresh date).

Please keep in mind the following exclusions:

  • In the case of an internal incident- if there has been an incident within your business where an employee, a customer or a client has been injured then this then means that it is important to refresh all colleagues with the relevant training to minimise the chance of it happening again.
  • In the case of an external incident- if there has been an incident outside of your business, but within your industry then this could be a time to refresh relevant training. Of course, this will only be applicable if the incident is severe, and you think that it poses a risk to your business and those who work within it and those who are clients. At the very least, it is going to be worthwhile refreshing their Health and Safety training.
  • If a process changes- if an internal process has changed, then it is going to be a good time to refresh any training that relates to this process. Particularly if you feel that it might impact what has been previously learnt.
  • If you bring in new equipment- if you introduce new equipment, you should provide training that is relevant to this change. Even if the change is slight; after all, prevention is always better than cure.
  • If there has been a change in the environment- if you move premises or have some changes made to where you work, then you will need to think about some of the training. This includes COSHH and Health and Safety.

This is an ‘entry level’ bundle, meaning there are no barriers for entry. You do not need any prior learning, qualifications or certificates to take this bundle and the included courses are suitable for all.

Once you have made payment:

  • A member of our team will contact you for the full names and email addresses of all candidates
  • A learner profile will be set up for each candidate on our Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Learners will be enrolled in the courses that you have purchased.
  • Log in credentials will be sent directly to candidates
  • Candidates can use the details in the credentials email to access the Learning Management System (LMS) where the courses will be available in their profile
  • If you experience any difficulties, please email us at admin@learnq.co.uk

Learn Q courses are available online, 24 hours per day 365 days per year so candidates can log in anytime, anywhere and complete them at their convenience. Ideal for those with busy schedules or shift workers.

Courses can be accessed and completed from any device with an internet connection, including desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.

Candidates do not have to complete the course in one sitting. The Learning Management System (LMS) will remember progress so if a candidate wants to do the course in small chunks they can do, continuing from where they left off.

FAQs

It is important that all staff have even a basic level of training when it comes to fire safety. This will help to ensure that any fires within your business are dealt with effectively and the risk of them spreading and causing damage is reduced.

If you want to ensure that your staff have the basics all covered in fire safety then the key points that you need to cover include:

  • Understanding the fire triangle
  • What to do when discovering a fire
  • The alarm procedure and where designated assembly points are
  • The different types of fires and how to extinguish them using fire extinguishers
  • What to do when someone on the premises has a disability

If they have knowledge and understanding of these things, then they are most likely to have all that they need to help should a fire occur.

The best way to protect your business against fire is to implement the basic fire safety rules. These rules are:

  • Carrying out a fire safety risk assessment
  • Ensuring that sources of ignition and flammable substances are kept well apart
  • Avoid any accidental fires
  • Ensure that good housekeeping is kept to at all times. This includes organising and clearing away rubbish that could possibly burn

The first aid at work qualification will last for three years before it needs to be repeated.

Someone who is trained in first aid does not have a legal obligation to provide first aid to someone. However, there is a moral obligation for them to help the casualty. Especially in situations whereby refusing to give first aid could result in the death of a casualty.

It is possible for a first aider to be sued after providing first aid to a casualty. However, it is worth being aware that no legal precedent has been set in the UK for an individual to successful sue someone who has given them emergency first aid.

The 5 principles of first aid are to preserve life, to prevent the escalation of an illness or an injury, to promote recovery, to provide pain relief and to protect those who are unconscious.

The 4 mail legal considerations relating to first aid are consent, duty of care, negligence and recording.

Workplace safety rules will often differ depending on the nature on the business and the type of work activities it completes. generally, safety rules might include:

  • understanding the risks in your individual workplace
  • being aware of your surroundings
  • knowing who the first aid officers are and where the first aid kits are located
  • taking regular breaks
  • using equipment correctly
  • paying attention to signs and other communications
  • being aware of emergency exits
  • completing all safety training and acting on its advice
  • taking responsibility for safety in your own environment
  • reporting any hazards

When it comes to first aid the number of first aiders that you have will depend on the number of employees that work within the premises. The recommendation of numbers of first aiders is just that, a recommendation.

It is recommended that you have a first aider for every hundred employees that your business has. Although you will need to assess your own risk factors and decide whether or not this number works for you or you need more.

Once you have used a fire extinguisher on a fire, even for a short time, it will need to be recharged. It will also need to be recharged and refilled once it has met a certain age. Foam, powder and water extinguishers may need to be discharged and tested every five years and possibly filled at this time too.

You need to replace your fire extinguisher every 10-12 years.

So long as a fire extinguisher is looked after and is serviced on a regular basis, it should last for as long as ten years before it needs to be replaced.

It may seem difficult to promote fire safety in your workplace, but the truth is that you may just be approaching it in the wrong way. The best way to try and promote it is to ensure that your staff appreciate that fires do happen and rather than thinking that it won’t happen to them, remember that the risk is always there.

In order to extinguish a fire there are some simple steps that you can follow. You want to:

  • Cool the fire
  • Smother the fire
  • Starve the fire
  • Interrupt the combustion process

Following these steps is going to give you the best chance of stopping a fire from spreading.

Fire hazards cover anything that could impede the function of any fire protection methods that are in place in a business, as well as anything that could be seen to inhibit fire safety.

An example of a fire hazard is an obstruction in from of the fire exit or main fire exit route in a business. Another would be if there was a fire alarm that was no longer working. Both of these can be a dangerous risk during a fire when people need to escape.

There are six main fire extinguisher types that you can use. These are water, foam, CO2, powder, water mist and wet chemical. Each of these types of extinguisher is going to be suitable for a different type of fire and are identifiable by their colour.

It is important to know which type is going to match which fire, otherwise you can make the situation worse. You can provide training for this, however, you can also display posters around your business for your staff to use in an emergency.

In order for a fire to start and then continue, there are three main elements in the fire triangle. These three things are oxygen, heat and fuel. Without one of these, the fire won’t be able to carry on burning. This is how a fire extinguisher works.

The five most common hazards in the workplace can be categorized as:

  • biological hazards including bacteria and viruses and insects which can cause illness.
  • Chemical hazards such as cleaning fluids or other chemicals which can cause damage such as irritation to the skin or respiratory systems, blindness, explosions or corrosion.
  • Physical hazards which include objects that can cause people to , trip or fall, plus factors that can harm employees without touching them such as noise, pressure or radiation. Physical hazards could also include houses which cause harm such as sharp edges or exposed wires.
  • Ergonomic hazards which can cause harm or injury to people because of the way they are set up for example poor workstation setup, poor posture or poor lifting technique.
  • Psychosocial hazards which are hazards that can power detrimental effect on employees well-being or mental health. These can include sexual harassment, discrimination and stress.
