Course Overview: Emergency First Aid at Work
Your staff will be equipped with the necessary skills to meet the requirements of the First Aid Regulations 1981 by enrolling in our Emergency First Aid Awareness course. Learn how to recognise emergencies, manage incidents appropriately, and administer first aid safely in this online course. In addition to basic life support, you will learn how to control bleeding, diagnose strains and sprains, and examine casualties.
Who is the Emergency First Aid at Work course for?
This First Aid Awareness course is designed for low-risk workplaces such as shops, restaurants or offices with employees who wish to learn or refresh their first aid skills.
Course Content
In this course you will learn about:
- Incident management
- Learn how to conduct a primary survey by understanding dangers, responses, airways, and breathing techniques.
- The basics of life support
- Become familiar with basic life support and why it is so important.
- CPR
- You will learn how to correctly position a casualty in the recovery position and perform CPR on them.
- Controlling bleeding
- what to do if a person is bleeding, applying a bandage correctly, and monitoring for signs that the condition may be worsening
- Choking
- What to do in case of choking for adults, children, and babies under the age of one.
- Casualty examination
- How to conduct a secondary survey as well as how to examine a casualty properly, including whether they have been injured, why they may be unconscious, and what you should look for throughout the examination.
- Unconsciousness
- the steps to take when a person is unconscious
- Injuries to the head
- Identify any symptoms and signs of head injuries that require medical attention if they occur, including concussions and compressions.
- Sprains and strains
- Recognising and treating sprains and strains
- Shock
- Signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock, plus how to treat shock in conscious or unconscious cases

This course is delivered and completed online, using a Learning Management Platform. Each learner will receive their own log in details, which means that you can track progress individually.

There is no expiry date for this certificate, however you may want to refresh the course periodically. The timescale for a refresh depends on the type of course that is being taken and the nature of your business. Ideally, the refresh regularity should be based on a thorough risk assessment of your business and tailored to the unique needs of your organisation and customers (if you are unsure how to complete a risk assessment, you can learn more by completing our Risk Assessment Awareness course).
If you are looking for a general rule for refresh training, every 12-18 months is good practice for the courses that Learn Q offer (we will also email you a reminder when you approach the recommended refresh date).
Please keep in mind the following exclusions:
- In the case of an internal incident- if there has been an incident within your business where an employee, a customer or a client has been injured then this then means that it is important to refresh all colleagues with the relevant training to minimise the chance of it happening again.
- In the case of an external incident- if there has been an incident outside of your business, but within your industry then this could be a time to refresh relevant training. Of course, this will only be applicable if the incident is severe, and you think that it poses a risk to your business and those who work within it and those who are clients. At the very least, it is going to be worthwhile refreshing their Health and Safety training.
- If a process changes- if an internal process has changed, then it is going to be a good time to refresh any training that relates to this process. Particularly if you feel that it might impact what has been previously learnt.
- If you bring in new equipment- if you introduce new equipment, you should provide training that is relevant to this change. Even if the change is slight; after all, prevention is always better than cure.
- If there has been a change in the environment- if you move premises or have some changes made to where you work, then you will need to think about some of the training. This includes COSHH and Health and Safety.
This is an ‘entry level’ course, meaning there are no barriers for entry. You do not need any prior learning, qualifications or certificates to take this course and it is suitable for all.

FAQs
The best way to reduce the risk of injury to employees within a workplace is to minimise the amount of manual handling that they do. However, if manual handling is still required then changes to deadlines and work routines should be implemented. This means that there is less chance that the person lifting will rush the process and there should not be a need for an excessive work rate.
Another way to reduce risk is to improve the working environment. There should be a focus on maximum space, with better flooring and extra lighting too.
Of course, the best way to reduce the risk of manual handling is to provide correct training for anyone who is likely to need to lift anything. Therefore they are given the tools and knowledge to do it safely themselves.
