This product is a self-led, online preparation course – all you need to prepare for your DPSI law exam.

Note: this course is NOT suitable for beginners. To take this course, you are advised to already have a Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting and a minimum of 2 years professional interpreting experience.

The Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is nationally recognised as the gold level standard for paid public service interpreting work. Interpreters who hold the qualification are eligible to apply for all UK public service interpreting assignments including legal interpreting jobs, which are often the highest paid public service interpreting jobs available.

This means that you could use your linguistic skills to help people from your community in settings such as:

The Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting self-led preparation course is ideal for bilingual/multilingual people who speak English and another language fluently and:

have a lower level interpreting qualification (e.g. Level 3 certificate in Community Interpreting)
have 2 or more years professional interpreting experience

You need a Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting or equivalent, plus 1-2 years professional interpreting experience to take this course.

The course incudes 100% online access to eleven 2 hour webinar videos, plus activities and assignments which cover the following topics:

Working as an interpreter in public services
Preparing for interpreting assignments
Interpret two way
Perform a sight translation to and from English
Interpret simultaneously
Perform a draft written translation to and from English
Types of crime and UK laws
The UK Justice (Courts and Tribunals) system
Police powers and procedures
Prison/probation
Immigration

The online webinars are packed with information about interpreting profession, industry requirements, legislations, glossaries, language providers and more but most importantly provide numerous exercises that will help you practice your interpreting skills. They are designed so that you are completely ready for your exam, and for your life as a professional interpreter.

There are no essays to write!

The exam is offered by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL).

The full DPSI (Units 01-05) can be taken in June. In November they offer the full DPSI (Units 01-05) for the Law pathway only and only written units (Unit 04 and Unit 05) for all other pathways.

Part 4: legal draft written translation from English

This course is itself not accredited, however, if you are successful in the exam offered by CIOL, that is accredited by the Institute of Linguists Educational Trust (IoLET)

To be successful in this course, you will need to study an average of 300-400 hours, which typically takes between 6 and 12 months.

The Level 6 DPSI is generally seen as the gold standard in interpreting, so most students do not study any higher level courses after attaining this one. You may choose to go on to study:
